LO1 - Madness: House of fun - Music analysis

I think this video is similar to the video we want to create as in the description of the video it states that they are 'acting out their coming of age in true madness style' this shows it's the bands way of coming to terms with the fact that they are not as young as most bands, which is the sort of thing we are going for.

Purpose & Meaning:

The purpose of the video is to entertain and have fun during filming,  and to promote the song house of fun within the form of music video, so that it has audio as well as visual. This is a music video that I think is closely similar to what our aim of music video is.  The video includes performance with lip-syncing and instruments such as the saxophone which allows them to have fun jumping around.

Content & Meaning:

The content in the video has scenes from many locations, such as a fairground, a chemists shop and a liquor store. Madness nearly always use a variety of different locations and strong colours in their videos, with House Of Fun being the best example. The lighting in the video is bright to reflect the strong colours. The Mise-en-scene of this video is several locations throughout with places like a fairground, a chemists shop and a liquor store, which gives the video a good verisimilitude as the setting look really realistic in these sort of settings. The lighting in the video is bright to reflect the strong colours used within the video for such as the costumes on them when they are dressed up as old people in the chemist or in suits on the rollercoaster, with the brightly coloured clown. This music video by madness as to be the best example for them pretty much always using bright colours in their music videos this could be to do with the fact that they are a lot of fun. The camerawork in the video is very shaky and unstable at points which gives of the meaning of it being a mess a round , like it's being recorded on low budget, however there is numerous clever camera shots within the video. Such as close ups, high angle shots, low angle shots, mid shots and long shots etc.

The close ups in the video show the details on the singers face, this is shown quite a lot with the man at the till allowing us to feel close to the character on screen as in reality we hardly let anyone that close to our face so its sort of like they are trusting you and allowing you to get into the mind of the character, so for example in this shot you see a close up of the man at the till (shown to the left). This also looks like he is looking directly at you so it looks like he is talking to you.

This shot shows three of the band members dressed up as old woman dancing around the chemist. This long shot doesn't clearly show the band members faces so this shot is not a full shot but it is also known as a three shot as there is three members in shot.

This shot is outside the location where they was filming and is shown to be a dispensing chemist, this helps the fact that they are playing on their age as, as you age you tend to be on more medications.

This is a mid shot from the video showing all the members of the band as well as a clown. They are seen to be all wearing suits this could connote formal, power or mystery.

Audience: The target audience of this music video would either be young people, or people of a similar age to the group as they will be able to understand the video as they are going through their coming of age, which people of a similar age can relate to, however it can also be aimed at a younger audience as it uses right colours and is rather fun and vibrant.

Genre: Is a music video is in the genre of ska/pop, which is the same as the music within the video.
