LO1: Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars analysis

Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars:

Purpose and form:

The purpose of this is to entertain as well as inform with the story of him waiting for his love. However this is in the form of a music video which makes its main purpose to be to entertain with something that keeps the viewer entertained to keep watching, which is probably where the story comes in as it will keep them more interested in watching.

Content and meaning:

During the music video content the lyrics ‘if I just lie here’ denotes the lyrics of the video as he is actually doing what the lyrics say, starting up with a long shot zooming out to a wide shot, then a low angle long shot. It follows a narrative with a mix of a few ideas as throughout the video he travels to different locations to try and find her, as it shows every time the narrative says ‘if I lay here’ he always has a space next to him, and not only that but anywhere in the vide you see the man he has a space next to him this could connote the fact he has a space next to him that he want to fill with the girl he is looking for.  They way the other people in the video just walk over him as if he isn’t there connote how lonely he feels as the lyrics and visuals are apparent on the screen and no one comes across to help him up or anything. The lyrics in the song ‘would you lie with me and just forget the world’ show that he doesn’t care what is going on in the world; this is denoted in the video by the way people step over him and only the fact that he wants to fill this empty space next to him with the girl he is looking for.The mise-en-scene in the video is set in a really busy town which connotes that everyone is getting in the way of him and his love. We see this when people don't seem to care that he's just lying in the middle of the road/floor and just stepping over him like he is nothing. High key lighting is used on the male actors face to potray innocence on the male to emphasis on the sad and upset emotions he is having. The way the man is wearing a grey shirt could show the characters vulnerability, he also wears a black t-shirt further on in the video which could connote negativity from the others around him or it could connote the idea of the mystery of the mystery love that you don't ever seem to see. Different camera shots and angles are used through the video The high angle shots convey the character as being weak and vulnerable; which gives the insight to his current state of mind, where as the close ups of him singing into the camera show the emotion and sadness within the eyes of the character.

There are many sorts of camera angles shown in this video.

Shot: Mid shot/Close up
Edit/ Effect: Cut to the next scene, zoom in
These shots both show the actor located to the left of the screen, which kind of gives you the feeling he is talking to someone. This helps make the audience realise that he still thinks he can see her, and still talk to her like shes still there, and can't accept the fact that she has gone.

Shot: Close up
Edit/ Effect: Zoom out
This shot shows the mans face close up then begins to zoom out showing him layed on the floor as he is saying, 'if i just lay here' showing anchorage on the visual and audio as he is literally just laying there.

Shot: Pan/Establishing shot
Edit: Fade in
This shot establishes the scene, by showing the environment the scene was shot in as well as fading to a shot of the same scene at night time, giving the effect of a day going by.

Shot: mid shot
Edit: Fade out
This shot shows the male waking down a busy street, in which he doesn't seem to realise the people around him showing he only cares about one person.

;
Shot: Long shot/ Dolly shot
Edit: Cut to next shot
This shot shows a shot of the man walking towards the camera which appears to be getting closer to the man, helping to see his emotions.

Shot: Long shot
Edit/Effect:: Cut to next shot
This shot shows the male standing in the middle of a road with flash lights from a car in the background connoting the fact that he really doesn't care.

Shot: Mid shot
Edit/effect: Zoom out, Cut to the next shot
This shot shows the male laying in the middle of a road nit giving a care, it also shows a space to the right of him which it often does connoting the fact that there is a part of him missing.

Shot: Extreme long shot
Edit/Effect: Zoom in, Cut to the next shot
This shot shows a man laying in the middle of the road not giving a care about the cars on  the road, but again this shot shows anchorage with the lyrics.

Shot: High angle shot
Edit/Effect: Cut to the next shot
This shot shows again a space to the right of him and it being a very slow song which fits with the song and shows the emotions and feelings within the song.

Shot: High angle,
Edit/effect: Cut to the next scene/ zoom in.
This is the next shot from the escalator which shows the man laying in front of the escalator with people stepping over him, give of the fact that people keep getting in the way of his relationship, as its shown with the space again at the right of him.

Shot: Mid shot, Eye level
Edit/effect: Cut to the next shot.
This shot is shown like it is from soemones view about to get on, this is then shown to be the male as he is then layed in the middle of the carriage of a very busy train, The fact that the doors close connotes the idea of his relationship with his love being over.

Shot: Establishing shot
Edit/Effect: From night to daylight, cut to next scene
This shot shows  where about hes is, which allows it to set the scene for the next few shots, this is also shown to be very busy connoting yet again people getting in the way of his relationship. This is also where the male is then seen laying onto of the tunnel.

Shot: Mid shot
Edit/ Effect: Cut to the next shot
This shot shows the male layed on a rock on top of a hill which is near  the very busy motorway. However this shot does not show his eyes in this shot just his mouth.

Shot: High angle shot
Edit:Zoom out and then cut to a black screen.
The make is then again seen to be laying to the left of the screen which connotes the idea of him thinking shes right next to him, again hes seen to be laying when hes singing the lyircs 'if i just lay here' also I have notice when he says 'would you lie with me' theres always a space next to him, however in this case im guessing he is in her flat and the bed they shared where the bed is unmade in the space he is hoping she would be layed.

Genre:
the genre of this song is alternative rock. However when you see the song you really don't see the rock sort of feel as it is quite a slow paced song, as well as the slow/normal paced video to go with it.

Audience:

The song aims at the audience of people who generally feel lonely or teenagers as its something they can relate to as quite a few teenagers think everyone is against them. The music video also aims at no specific gender, as it is an issue everyone can come to face with in his or her life. However if you are a follower of the band then you would also be classed as their target audience.
