LO1: Ed Sheeran - A Team Analysis

Ed Sheeran – A Team

Purpose:
The purpose of the video is to tell a story from both the audio of the music and the visual in the video of the girl and how she lives her life, because of her addiction, its a very powerful video to show the story of the girl. The fact that the whole music video is in black and white could connote the feeling of death or past, and the fact that it is taken on a low budget really adds to the effect with shaky cameras and unsteady footage.

Form:
This is in the form of a music video which has a very strong point to put across. The music video for Ed Sheeran - A Team follows a storyline without any shots of the actual performer singing but with the singer being a part of the story but not a big part. The video is about a girl’s life and is told from someone else’s perspective.  The way at the beginning she reaches out her arms and acts like she has freedom contrast with the rest of the video.

Content and meaning:
The content of the video include things like a woman drug abusing, and selling herself, makes the audience start to think about why she is doing it the melody makes the audience sympathise with the actress, which refers to Goodwin's theory of the relationships with the visuals on screen and the lyrics of the song. The mise-en-scene within the video of the costumes used by the girl shows she’s uncomfortable, as she is wearing ripped tights and a coat that is far to big for her and probably not even hers to start with, as well as thick amounts of make up on her face. You see her putting this make up on further in the video of a close up of her face this shows that she’s up to something for money for drugs this is helped to figure out with lyrics from the song stating 'do anything for a couple of grams', we see that she would also do anything got money to get drugs when there is a long shot of her legs walking down the street and getting into the car of a strange man. The video there is a natural light to make the video seem more realistic as it is suppose to be a video about her life and how she lives it. However there is a key light on her face to show the focus on her within the video, showing she is really what you need to be focusing on as there was all the busy crowds as it was in the centre of London. The way the video repeat its self in like a circle shows that it’s just part of her life and that it’s just an everyday thing that happens so it happens over and over again, this is shown by the way the emphasis on the drugs she gets making it out that her life revolves around them. Within video there are a lot of close ups of the girls face which makes the audience feel sorry for the girl as the lyrics from the song link to what the girl is going through in her life as the story starts at the end.  The audience is made to feel sorry for her during the close up of her wiping her tears.  At the beginning of the video there is also a long shot of the girl laid on the bench in a sleeping bag, this connotes her misfortune, this creates focus on the girl as they want to know more into the story of why she’s there.

Genre:

The genre of this music video is to sort of inform about the sort of situation the woman has put herself in and how she lived her life. It makes you think about how the people you know may not be really what you think they are.

Audience:
The video aims at people within the audience of both genders male and female as the song targets an issue both genders can get caught up in not just females (as the main actress in the video is female it may capture more females in a similar situation), where as the target age group for the music video would be about 15 – 25, as this is similar to the singers age and probably know someone who has being through a similar situation, as well as similar to the actresses age.
